We set up a backyard sugaring operation for the first time last year. We read all the books and tapped our first tree near Waterbury on March 18th. We gathered sap up until about April 10. In the beginning, there was a couple of feet of snow and we were snowshoeing in but the snow had pretty much all melted out by early April. From what we were told, most of the big sugarhouses had started a lot earlier in the season and were disappointed by their yield.
